The Village
I was talking to a friend overseas a couple of weeks ago and he told me in simple words that he had fallen asleep for an hour while watching "The Village" and that he still was able to follow the rest of the movie.
That, my dear readers, aptly sums up "The Village" for you.
"The Village" is the latest Twist-In-The-Second-Half series introduced by M. Night Shyamalan ever since his swashbuckling debut with The Sixth Sense. That his other movies are not so swashbuckling is a matter of debate but he seems to have completely ignored the importance of an engrossing screenplay.
Nothing much happens in The Village but for the much awaited twist in the second half. In fact you start your countdown right from the first scene, "OK, So this should be the twist in the tale. No, that explains it. But if that's true then those incidents should never have happened..."
And in this guessing game, you end up completely ignoring what is happening on the screen. In fact the first half is so boring that the only interesting thing about it was the thought that there is going to be a twist.
So when the twist actually comes you heave a sigh of relief and then you try to act natural by being stunned by the twist. That is what you are supposed to do in a Night Shyamalan's movie. Ain't it?
I am not going to tell you the story of this movie here because sans the twist, there is no story in the movie and if I tell you what the twist is, you cannot see the movie. There is one area where this movie is different from Shyamalan's other works. This has two twists. Wow! An additional twist for the same ticket price. Too good. So what are you waiting for? Get your popcorn and rush to your nearest theatre. You should really rush because they might take the movie off the marquee anytime soon.
